The Bethel, Maine showroom was located on the second floor of a barn that was originally used for storing and processing locally mined gems.
The first Portland, Maine showroom was below a working sail loft in the
"Old Port", Portland's revitalized shopping and hospitality district.
S. Timberlake Company was founded in Bethel, Maine as a mail order company by Sam,Ross, and Natalie Timberlake in 1974 and did not have a "formal" showroom store until 1979 when space was leased in Portland, Maine's "Old Port District."
The first products we made were the classic ladderback Shaker chairs. We were impressed by the strength of the joints and durability of such a light-weight chair. Today, we make a complete catalog of Shaker furniture for every room in the house.
In 2015, after 41 years of ownership, Ross sold the business to a longtime customer and admirer of their craftsmanship.
Ross and Carole Timberlake continue to manage and operate the workshops and showroom in a rambling 19th Century farmhouse and a new workshop on Route 2 in Bethel,Maine. Tours of the workshops are frequently given to visitors. You will find the showroom/workshops at 158 Mayville Rd. by following Route 2 (from Bar Harbor - Bangor to the east, Vermont from the west), Route 26 from Portland, Maine to Canada, or Route 5 from the Fryeburg/North Conway, New Hampshire area.
