Canterbury Shaker
Ladderback Chairs
Shaker ladder back chairs made
at the Canterbury, New Hamsphire Shaker village featured a
distinctive, oblong finial and the slats graduated in height from top
to bottom. The Shakers may not have invented the ladderback chair but
they did improve upon the traditional design by crafting them with a
gradual tilt so they didn't sit "straight up." All S. Timberlake
dining chairs have a five degree tilt like many of the original
Shaker chairs.
